Aaron Higareda

Discipline/Field: Playwright

Based in: Los Angeles, CA

About: Aaron Higareda is a southern California playwright who earned his MFA in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts from the University of California, Riverside. The first play in his Rhino Cycle – “You don’t even speak Spanish!” – was a 2023 Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference semifinalist and a 2022 Latinx Theatre Commons Comedy Carnaval finalist. He says he writes to face his fears and confront himself and the world.

Project Title: The Rhino Cycle is a series of three plays each revolving around the murder of Aaron’s Uncle: “You don’t even speak Spanish!”, “Cry Now, Laugh Later”, and “The Legend of the Rhino”. Each play attempts to explore the impact of generational trauma that gang violence has caused for a particular Mexican-American southern California family, and how they might one day heal from it.
