Discipline/Field: Playwright & Performance Artist
Based in: Los Angeles, CA
About: Linda Ravenswood is a prolific poet scholar who over the past decade has accumulated impressive commissions, publications, and accolades for her dedication to the stories of marginalized and disenfranchised people. Part First Nation, part Mayflower descendant, part Indigenous Baja Californian, and raised in Los Angeles by Holocaust survivors, her creativity is informed by memory, history, place and lineage.
At YNR, Ravenswood will take her research and analysis of the work and life of Cuban American artist Ana Mendieta and finalize the development of a play.
Project Title: The Ana Mendieta Project builds on Mendieta’s study of primal elements, human interpersonal relations, separation, immigration, the status of women, and violence to address an analytical gap in the history of the artist. Using some of Mendieta’s performance modalities to speak in her own language, this public-facing vehicle underscores the need to present past injustices accurately so that instead of perpetuating them it sensitizes the audience to overarching human qualities and liberates them of historically rendered stereotypes.
