Marta Gosovska

Discipline/Field: Translation

Based in: Lviv, Ukraine

About: Marta Gosovska is a Ukrainian translator and editor experienced in translating both fiction and non-fiction from English into Ukrainian. She is profoundly committed to fostering cross-cultural understanding through her translations and has recently begun taking projects translating Ukrainian into English with the goal of bringing Ukrainian literature to a wider, global audience. She holds a Master’s degree in Philology from Ivan Franko National University of Lviv where she also completed postgraduate studies specializing in Literary Theory and Comparative Studies. Among her many activities she serves as the editor-in-chief of translations at Laboratoria publishing house.

Project Title: As the 2024 winner of the LA Review of Books + Yefe Nof Emerging Translator Residency, Gosovska will refine her translation of a chapter of Ukrainian writer Olena Pshenychna’s novel, Where the Sun Sets, in consultation with literary translator Boris Dralyuk. Each chapter is a self-contained, stylistically polished novella in a novel that captures a deeply moving and human story set against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine. The war is present in every aspect of life, but the novel does not focus on battles or violence; instead, it tells the quieter, poignant stories of loss, survival, and resilience. The translation will be published in the LARB Quarterly.
